What is underlay?
Underlay is material placed underneath your carpet before it is fitted. It has a number of benefits and uses and is a key part of fitting carpet in a room, or any area of your home.
The benefits of underlay…
Your choice of underlay can be just as important as your choice of carpet.
You may not see the underlay hiding underneath your carpet, but you will notice a big difference in the feel and comfort of your carpet, how long the carpet lasts, the insulation and noise reduction, depending on your choice of underlay.
Comfort
Underlay provides a spongy yet solid layer of cushioning to your flooring. Once your carpet has been fitted on top, you have ultimate comfort underfoot!
Longer lasting carpet
If you were to lay carpet straight over concrete or floorboards, quickly the carpet would flatten. With underlay underneath you increase the lifespan of your carpet.
Noise reducing
Underlay is also great at absorbing impact, which means it is great for reducing noise, whether its footsteps, moving furniture around, music, or voices.
Insulation
On top of all that, a good quality underlay can help to save you money. The underlay provides insulation, reducing the amount of heat loss, in return resulting in lower energy bills (what we all need right now!).
From these 4 benefits alone, you can see how important it is to have good quality underlay installed underneath your carpet.
Most commonly used underlay…
The most common type of underlay used is Foam Underlay, which is typically made of PU (polyurethane) foam.
Foam underlay is soft and lightweight, and good for reducing noise and insulation. It’s also straightforward to fit, making it great for use on staircases.
